I joined a group of street photographers early this morning to witness this act of Penitensya in the town of Nasugbu which happens every year on a Good Friday. More than 40 men and women made true to their "panata" once again but this time it's more of a role play or a stage show with a bigger audience.

The pain is necessary and obligatory to achieve its purpose. The wounds are real but no longer create a lingering scar from every lash and cut on the flesh. This ritual is neither obsolete nor forgotten in the time of instagram and facebook and will continue to exist in this town to deliver a message about Jesus Christ, holy week, salvation, sacrifice, and redemption as the desiderata of the current generation.
